The challenge
Plejd is a Scandinavian-based IoT company that provides wireless lighting solutions.
The project goal was to redesign their existing RTR-01 rotary interface, optimizing it for new markets and enhancing the installation experience. Retrofit compatibility with many 3rd party frames was a vital feature to reach more homes.

The process
Product journey
Throughout the development process, all stakeholders were considered. Plejd's in-house teams were frequently asked for feedback, which was used to improve the design. Balancing different pain points was crucial to creating the best possible solution.
For Plejd, the electrician's experience is of utmost importance, and offering them useful features and a clean design is a way to maintain a long-term relationship. Even though the product will be covered during use, the installation should still evoke an emotional response in the installer.

The development process was highly iterative, with a 3D printer always close at hand it was easy to prototype ideas and get feedback. Involving suppliers early in the process was essential to create an informed design, we had a tight collaboration with them since many components were custom-made or required advanced manufacturing methods.
Design
To achieve a clean exterior, most features were hidden inside. This was a challenge given the dimmer’s low profile. However, sketching many section views and concepts made it easier.

As the project neared production, additional technical evaluations became necessary. This stage provided a valuable learning experience in preparing a design for industrialization.

The results

While the brand's colors are predominantly white and blue, the addition of black creates contrast and highlights the white components. For parts that enhance the installer's experience, the brand's signature blue was used to improve their perception of the brand.

Puck
The product’s main functionality, dimming, is not completed until the electronic module is added, giving the rotary interface different functionalities. RTR-02 was designed to match and enhance the puck’s form and colours.
Frames
With over 20 compatible frame geometries, the end-user has complete freedom of choice, enabling Plejd to be installed in a wider range of environments.
